honest questions
and other poems
Little by little, I’ve continued working on my handmade poetry cards. I’ve enjoyed watching folks dig through my little box of poems at open mics and events, picking out cards that speak to them personally and even making selections for friends.
Regardless of other people’s reactions, I’ve found my own comfort in creating. This process encourages me to take my eyes off the screen, re-visit my poems old & new, abandon perfectionism, immerse myself in the present moment, and focus on using my hands to make something tangible, individual, and fully real.
Here is a small collection of 8 one-of-a-kind cards, featuring original poems from my published poetry books. The following pieces explore themes of poetry, art, surviving & striving toward a greater purpose, especially amidst chaos, confusion, and decay. Transcriptions of poems are included below each card. I am selling these for $4 each, plus shipping if applicable. If you see any you would like to claim as your own, just leave a comment or message me!
You are invited to commission a custom card or handmade book on a topic of your choice by emailing me at dithyrambler@dandelionscribes.com ⚘

HONEST QUESTIONS … and other poems
HONEST QUESTIONS
what does it mean i forget
you are here? when will it end
will it last the whole year?
what month should i ask
for another chance? what
day did you say you’d ask me
to dance? what road did you
take when traveling home?
why do i break when you leave
me alone? what do i do if we’re
just passing through? i drift
into dreams and hope i find you.
⚘
IN THE QUIET RHYME
i could spend my loneliness
shut in the quiet rhyme
of all the nights without you
pen to page
i leave my love in letters
that you will never see,
write every secret into wild life –
why?
because we can have eternity
(poetry is immortality)
⚘
SECRET
every poet
has a secret,
at least. i’ll tell
you mine: sometimes
i don’t
know what i mean –
i guess i like
the mystery.
⚘
DIX AND THE DANCER
otto dix
painted lady in red –
anita – found
at 29, dead –
forever younger
than i am now,
worn with the weight
of the world on her brow.
her body did burn,
consumed by the flame
feasting on beauty,
evading the blame –
cast like a shadow
to cover the eyes,
shaped by the state,
upheld by their lies.
degenerate artist
lent color to truth,
brought darkness to light,
recorded the proof
of power corrupted,
captured in time:
the monster behind
the mask and the crime.
held – honest – in hand,
the dancer stands strong –
gazing – her age
beyond all that went wrong.
⚘
DIRTY WORK
your daddy was dirt poor
because america said so,
said the dream was to rise
up out of the dirt and
prove your worth
but the trick was america made
you do its dirty work
hollow out the earth
and build a barren body
in place of
her.
⚘
ONE WAY TO STAY ALIVE
there is one way to stay alive
aim your eye
on everything that takes
a frigid flame to your desire
cock the shotgun and shoot
knock the life out
of any menace that threatens
to bruise
the ambrosial blossom
those astral bones
that form and frame
the divine in you
⚘
GOD IS CHANGE
after Octavia E. Butler
i am the hanged man
and the shining sun is in
the past
i am upside-down and
the world will never be
the same
such perspectives honor
change
⚘
WONDER
home is the color of smoke – an absurd
adagio – approaching a pain more alien
than any music i could have imagined.
why did i come here?
to make my masterpiece.
to haunt the dead.
to howl her heart.
to tear through this wasteland of wonder
and piece together
a world, amounting
to joy. to the shimmering demands
of the unknown. to balance
the black and the moon.
